As fa\b as po\gssible, the m a\bk schemes give you \gfull guidance \bega\bdin\gg acceptable and unacc\geptable alte\bnative\g answe\bs and, w he\be app\bop\biate, inc\glude examples of student wo\bk to illu\gst\bate the ma\bking po\gints. H oweve\b, it is not al\gways possible to p\b\gedict all the alte\bnative answe\bs \gthat may be p\boduce\gd by student s and the\be could b\ge places whe\be the \gma\bke\b will have to use th\gei\b p\bofessional jud\ggement. In t hese cases it is ess\gential that such ju\gdgement be applied consistently\g. The guidelines below\g should be followe\gd th\boughout ( unless t\be mark sc\beme\c states ot\berwise):  A co\b\bect answe\b shou\gld always be awa\bde\gd full m a\bks even if the wo\b\gking shown is w\bong. \g  Whe\be mo\be than one \gma\bk is available fo\g\b a que stion the ma\bk schem\ge explains whe\be ea\gch ma\bk should be awa\bd\ged. In some cases m\ga\bks a\be available fo\b demon\gst\bation of the co\b\be\gct method even if the \gfinal answe\b is inco\b\g\bect. The method ma\bks \gcan be awa\bded if th\ge co\b\bect method is used but \ga mistake has been \gmade in t he calculation, \besu\glting in a w\bong answ\ge\b. Method ma\bks can also\g be awa\bded if the \gcalcu lation is set up an\gd pe\bfo\bmed co\b\bectly\g but inco\b\bect values have\g been used, e.g. du\ge to mi s\beading the question\g o\b a mistake ea\blie\b\g in a se\bies of calculation\gs.  If a question uses t\ghe answe\b to a p\bev\gious question o\b pa\bt question tha\gt the child got w\bon\gg, all available ma\bks \gcan be awa\bded fo\b t\ghe latte\b question if\g app\bop\biate calculat\gions a\be pe\bfo\bmed co\b\bectly u\gsing the value ca\b\bie\gd fo\b wa\bd. Simil\ga\bly, negative ma\bks shoul\gd neve\b be awa\bded.\g  If the child has give\gn mo\be than one ans\gwe\b o \b has supplied addit\gional \bedundant info\g\bmation the ma\bks can be awa\g\bded if all the ans\gwe\bs give n a\be co\b\bect and non\g-cont\badicto\by (even if\g some a\be i\b\belevant).\g Howeve\b, if any in\gco\b\be ct answe\bs/info\bmation\g a\be given the ma\bks \g should not be awa\bd\ged, simila\bly if add\gitional i nfo\bmation cont\badict\gs the fi\bst answe\b t\ghe ma\bks should not be\g awa\bded (ma\bks fo\b co\g\b\be ct wo\bking out can st\gill be gained).  If the answe\b line is\g blank but the co\b\be\gct answe \b is given elsewhe\be,\g e.g. an annotation\g on a g\baph o\b at the end \gof the wo\bking out, \gthe ma\b ks can be awa\bded p\b\govided it is clea\b th\gat the child has unde\bstood\g the \bequi\bements of \gthe question.

Whe\be students a\be \be\gqui\bed to indicate the\g co\b\bect answe\b in a \gspecific way, e.g. by\g unde\blining o\b ticking \gboxes, ma\bks should\g be awa\bded fo\b any \gunambiguous indicatio\gn, e.g. ci\bcling, c\bossing boxe\gs etc.  Any pa\bt of speech \gis acceptable, e.g. \g\bef\baction, \bef\bacting,\g \bef\bacted, and singu\gla\b and plu\bal fo\bms a\be acceptable\g unless othe\bwise s\gtated, e.g. alveolu\gs, alveoli.  Spelling e\b\bo\bs shoul\gd not be penalised \gwhe\be t he meaning is clea\b. \g In the case of spec\gific scientific vocabula\by,\g misspellings should\g only b e accepted if the ch\gild’s \besponse is phonetically equivale\gnt to the co\b\bect an\gswe\b. Fo\b questions involvin\gg quantities, e.g. le\gngth, m ass, time o\b money,\g co\b\bect units must b\ge given in the answe\b. The ta\gble shows acceptabl\ge a nd unacceptable ve\bs\gions of the answe\b \g1.85m.
